Tal Newberry, a former recipient of Contractors Who Care, passed away on Dec. 25, 2019. He asked for donations to Contractors Who Care – under the direction of NARI Remodelers Association – to provide services to those in need due to an unexpected illness that can create a financial burden for most.

What is Contractors Who Care?

The Contractors Who Care program was established by NARI several years ago to provide a vehicle in which NARI members could give back to their community. We provide labor and materials for small remodeling projects needed by a community member in need. The NARI Contractors Who Care program does accept applications for projects big and small. The approval process is based upon the project, need and NARI’s ability to get the materials and labor donated.

A copy of our user agreement is available at the bottom of this page. If a community member wishes to seek help from the program, they should review the contract and write a letter to NARI explaining the need and the hardship facing the applicant, making it hard to get it done through normal channels.

Past community projects have included remodeling the Boys and Girls Club building, working on a new entrance for the Discovery Center and numerous residential projects including working with the National Guard to assist families with a deployed member with small home maintenance tasks.

Donations of time, and/or money to the fund are appreciated.

Projects

2016

Through the arrangement of Contractors Who Care Committee Chair Joe Levitch the program recently helped a disabled US veteran to remove a tub and replace it with a walk-in shower.
The Vietnam veteran suffered a significant stroke and is flaccid on one side. The veteran’s wife has been his caretaker while continuing to run their small business.

The VA was willing to help cover costs up to a point, but the allowance only paid for the shower unit. Contractors Who Care stepped in and provided all the demolition, remodeling and installation for the project.

2015

Our two projects during this involved assisting terminally ill folks a woman in Boise and an elderly couple in Nampa. Each had new roofs provided and installed.
Last month we were asked again for help and responded to an urgent need for a bathroom remodeling project in Parma Idaho. An old claw foot tub was too difficult to use.

A curbless shower was donated by Custom Bath Solutions and Levco offered to do the demolition and framing of the new structure. Sadly the client passed away 4 days after the demo and framing but the show must go on and the project will be completed for his mom.

2013

The project was undertaken by NARI member Joe Levitch and his company, LEVCO. Joe responded to this opportunity up because it touched a chord in him. An anonymous donor supplied the materials and his crew put it together with attention to every detail.
Here is why Joe said “We got this one!” As a part-time EMT he remembered transporting a fellow that had been hospitalized for an extended period and was recently diagnosed with a terminal disease. The patient had just decided to enroll into hospice care across town at the VA.

Joe recalls “His wife and the family went up ahead. As I rolled him towards the ambulance I decided to divert and I rolled him into the sunshine and stopped for a few minutes.

“Upon arriving at the VA a little late, he explained to his wife that we were delayed because I had taken him into the sunshine for awhile “It felt like heaven honey!” he said. I will never forget him nor the possibility of sharing that feeling with another human being through a simple act of humanity.

“I did this one for Jeff Furner a Paramedic and Nurse, He passed not too long ago but his memory will remain alive in me for the rest of my days. Rest in peace brother.”

2012

In recognition of National Remodeling Month and National Building Safety Month, two local non-profit associations involved in the building industry joined together to help the Discovery Center of Boise with a project.
NARI of Idaho (the National Association of the Remodeling Industry representing Idaho remodelers) and BSPSI (the Building Safety Professionals of Southwest Idaho representing building inspectors) worked together in a public/private partnership to assist the Discovery Center with a large remodeling project needed for an upcoming exhibit.

The project involved the construction of a front walk-way and railing to take advantage of a second entrance into the Discovery Center.

Members of both organizations worked side by side, donating labor, materials and funds.
